Today, Cypress grows from the hilly country to the swamps throughout the southern United States. Acadian’s central location in the southeast portion of Louisiana is considered the goldmine of the Cypress forest industry. The environment in this area is a diverse, fragile, vibrant and fertile one. Louisiana is teaming with the wildlife unparalleled by any of its adjoining states. The delta of the mighty Mississippi River feeds this wildlife and the immense forest covering the swamps. Today erosion control is an issue and tomorrow it will become a part of the past. Louisiana’s legislators are preparing new ways to protect the resource and make it stronger for future generations. The past diversions and controls of the watershed for this area are marked by standing dead timber. Poisoned by the saltwater backwash from the gulf and the attempt to control the yearly flooding that historically brings new life into this area, flushing the water through the swamps produces new life there and brings nutrients elsewhere, continuing the circle of life.
Pecky: Usually grows only in mature trees ranging an average of 100 years in age. The anaerobic bacteria producing the accordian effect decay dies when the tree is felled. Today, trees are found with “Pecky” in them at much earlier ages.
Standard: Or commonly called “Re-growth” is proof that Cypress can grow at rapid rates similar to other species such as Pine, Oak etc. Sold in SELECT and #2 COMMON, this is the backbone of Acadian’s supply line.
Choctaw: Reserved as first growth or Mature Red Cypress. Acadian aquires approximately 2% of this product from its production. When the richest tambour is needed, this will be your choice! (Available only as accumulated)
Sinker: Also called Deadhead in other parts of the South. 100% heartwood is a must as the sap falls off in the underground/water surrounding. Sinker can run from yellow to black as it takes on the color of its surrounding.
De-Nailed: Also called Barnyard, Recycled, or Salvage. This material develops from old barns, warehouses in the old New Orleans Warehouse District, cotton gins from the 1800’s and 1900’s. Sugar Mills and the list goes on. It is Acadian’s goal to recycle as much material as possible to effeciently utilize the full scope of the product. |
